I was just out for a short errand, and some idiot in a 4runner was riding my ass the entire way. I pull up to a stop light, it turns green and I proceed forward. The problem is I drive a stick and this asshole must've thought I was reversing into them when I rolled back maybe a fraction of an inch because They mashed on their horn. The funny thing is they followed me after this (we were going the same direction for a while) AND STILL RODE MY ASS! Do people not learn from their mistakes, or better question why do people stop an inch from someones bumper at a stop light? I didnt hit them, but If I did I doubt it would have been my fault there also would have been almost no damage because it would have been a less than 1mph collision.

From what my drivers ed teacher taught me, if you roll into them because they are too close, it is their fault, and they are responsible for the damages.

Yeah my 240Z will roll back a bit, I have to use the ebrake. People have no idea about older cars or manuals anymore. Pisses me off! I was on a hill and the cars were only moving up one at a time slowly. I had to get out and yell at the guy to give me a few feet because I had a fucking old car with a manual. I fucking chewed them out, they kept going right up close to me.

He even told us that some guy in a little honda was tailgating him and his friend, so his friend rolled his jeep into the civic, putting his trailer hitch through the civics bumper. That civic owner learned a nasty lesson that day to never tailgate an asshole in a stick shift.

The thing is a 4runner is actually taller than my truck, and I couldnt see their headlights in my rear windshield so they mustve been pretty damn close

rofl.

I have recently learned with my car just how few fucking people understand how cars work, especially manuals. I get people on my ass all the time, even after I give them the little roll warning.

Depends on the state. My friend got rear-ended at a red light and the other driver claimed he rolled into him, state trooper placed my friend at fault.

I like cars with sturdy rear bumpers. Brake check all the ass holes. And since they were close enough to get caught by a brake check its automatically their fault, no questions. I just wish I didn't need to do it. Its quite sad.

Maybe I'll put that police bull bar on the back of my SHO...

Yes, you can. E-brake is not involved in proper hill starts. Heel and toe.

He was rather pissed off, but being in a small town, the trooper remembered him from when his old truck drove itself into a building...

That makes sense as to why the trooper would think he was at fault.

You should not need an E-brake to do a hill start.

I'll have to try that. My driveway is actually a pretty steep hill so its a perfect testing ground

It was rather humorous. He put his truck in park, but it never engaged. Then he had to jump it off and start it from under the hood because the ignition was mess up, so it took off in reverse toward a busy 4-lane highway, the door caught a pole and somehow turned it around, and then it backed into a building.

I'd recommend starting on flat or a mild hill, but it's a really useful technique to master. Perfectly rev-matching a downshift while trail braking is one of the best feelings you can have behind the wheel.

People are assholes. All of them. Especially 4Runner drivers and internet commenters.

Remember to keep your cool and let shitheads be shitheads. It's not worth the aggravation to get into something with people like that!

I can usually balance any of my vehicles on the clutch before I start moving even, or I can use hand brake if its a super steep hill..the only one that I can't disengage the parking brake in super easy is the pick up (which is still fairly easy)..or I can just shove it in 4 low and drive with the parking brake still on, lmao

Ive gotten pretty good at hillstarts (without braking), I dont roll back enough to hit someone unless they are less than an inch from my rear bumper, then it would really be their fault. This guy just was an idiot, The only explanation I can think of for the honk is he thought I was reversing and doesnt know what reverse lights are.

Kinja'd!!! Übel > WhereAreMyPants

With some precision footwork, you really don't even need to involve the brakes at all. Just gotta be quick about it.

Kinja'd!!! Kat Callahan > m-b-w loves his SUBAROO
01/26/2015 at 22:01

Kinja'd!!!1

Exactly. Rolling back is part of how the mechanics of a manual transmission work. That's called tailgating, son. And such a collision is on them.

01/26/2015 at 22:01

It was really messed up lol. It was still drivable, but the drivers door wouldn't shut or open correctly because of the impact with the pole that turned the truck.

You don't "need" to do it. If they hit you, it's legally their fault anyway . . . despite it being intentionally caused by you.

I am in no way defending the douche that was riding your ass and stopped inches from you at the traffic light, but... Ohio has a 'failure to control' law and I assume must other states have something similar. It's a giant catch-all that basically says that if you can't control your car enough to prevent it from hitting something it's not supposed to you're at fault. I would think most cops would cite you under a law of that type if you rolled backward into someone as the key would be your car is in motion, the other car stationary. Hell I would cite you under those circumstances. Also there is no law in Ohio that says you have to stop a certain distance away from another vehicle.

Learn to heel/toe. Anyone driving a three pedal vehicle should. It's also a lot of fun to execute a perfectly rev-matched downshift.

It doesnt need to be heel and toe, you just need to change of pedals quick and not stall. And not floor the gas pedal because "quick"
